Rep. Morrie Lanning

Inducted Saturday, September 29, 2007

Inductee

Morrie Lanning graduated from Moorhead High School in 1962. During high school, Lanning was president of the Student Council and involved in football, wrestling, thespians, Wig and Sig, track and Declamation. In 1964 Lanning was a member of Concordia College’s NAIA national championship football team. He graduated from Concordia College in 1966 and earned a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from North Dakota State University in 1968.

Lanning held several positions at Concordia College from 1966-1973. He became dean of students in 1973. From 1979 until beginning his retirement in 2005, Lanning was vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Concordia. 

In 1973 Lanning was elected Third Ward alderman on the Moorhead City Council. He was reelected in 1977. Lanning was elected mayor of Moorhead in 1979, serving from 1980 through 2001. Throughout his years of public service he has held numerous leadership positions in city, state and regional organizations, including Moorhead Healthy Community Initiative, Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities, West Central Minnesota Initiative Fund, Minnesota Mayors Association, League of Minnesota Cities and Rural Initiatives Coalition.

Since 2003 Lanning has served as state representative for Minnesota House District 9A. He currently is serving his third term. His current committee assignments include taxes; property tax relief and local sales tax division; capital investment finance division; local government and metropolitan affairs; and mental health division. Lanning is a member of several boards and commissions including Minnesota’s Sesquicentennial Commission; Commission to End Poverty by 2020; Capitol Area Architectural and Planning Board; and Great Lakes Commission, and he serves on the Steering Committee for the Legislators Forum composed of legislators from Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Manitoba. 

In 1976 Lanning was named one of Ten Outstanding Young Minnesotans. More recently, Lanning has been recognized for his legislative work by organizations including Child Care WORKS, Minnesota School Boards Association, League of Minnesota Cities, Coalition of Greater Minnesota Cities, National Federation of Independent Business and Minnesota Citizens for the Arts. He is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead Kiwanis and Moorhead Rotary.

Morrie is married to Ruthie Lanning. They have two children, Ann Christenson and Mike Lanning, and two grandchildren, Benjamin and Parker Christenson. He lives in Moorhead, Minnesota.
