Thanks to a winter activities season that saw the Spuds collect two more state championships and a slew of section titles, interest in Moorhead Spuds merchandise is surging. Inside Moorhead High School, it’s MHS students staffing Spuddy’s Store and working hard to keep fans outfitted in orange and black.
Located in the main commons at Moorhead High, just west of the gym, Spuddy’s Store is far more than a place to pick up a new hoodie or cap. It is a living laboratory for Mrs. Kathi Salvevold’s Retail Management & Merchandising class through the MHS Career Academy.
“Being part of Spuddy’s Store gives business students valuable hands-on experience to apply the skills they learn in class,” said Salvevold. “They develop teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills by working together and making real business decisions. We are excited to offer students the opportunity to work in the store through our classes or as members of our Business Professionals of America student organization.”
This Career and Technical Education (CTE) course gives students the opportunity to manage every facet of a modern retail operation. Students in the program are responsible for:
Inventory Management: Tracking stock levels and predicting high-demand items
Sales & Customer Service: Assisting peers and staff with a professional touch
Marketing & Merchandising: Designing displays and creating buzz for new arrivals
Financial Literacy: Handling transactions and understanding the bottom line
“By working in the store and getting to talk to customers, I’ve become more confident in my tone and being able to speak up when I need to,” said junior Hunter Orona-Christensen, who staffs Spuddy’s Store on A Days at MHS.
Students also get the opportunity to choose the style and design of some items that the store stocks each year, such as the popular baseball caps that follow the current trend and have “SPUDS” upside down on the crown. This year’s most popular Spuddy’s Store item, the Spuds mock turtleneck, is also a student creation.
“The ‘Mock Neck’ was a really great design and it sold really well,” added junior Sonny San, also working at Spuddy’s Store on A Days. “Our entire first shipment sold out really fast and now people have to sign up to buy them because they’re on backorder.”
Spuddy’s Store at MHS is open for MAPS staff to shop—with a 15% discount if they’re wearing their name badge—on school days 2:00-3:25 p.m. and every other school day 8:30-9:55 a.m. (schedule subject to change on late start and early out days). The shop is open to the public during select Spuds activities, which are posted at the beginning of every month on the Spuddy’s Store Instagram page.
