Red River Area Learning Center students sew dresses, mittens for service learning project
February 3, 2015
In January, Red River Area Learning Center students made 23 dresses from pillowcases to be sent to children in Uganda. They also sewed mittens and scarves from donated old sweaters, and they knitted hats to donate locally.
After researching local service agencies, the ALC students voted to donate their 10 sweater mittens, two scarves and 10 knitted hats to Churches United and Sister’s Path.
The service learning project helped the students understand the importance of giving to others and using their talents to give back to the world around them, learn basic sewing skills and work cooperatively. According to Red River ALC teacher Aura Lee Mohror, the students have decided they want to continue working on the sewing projects when they have time.
This is the second year the students have sewn dresses for children in Uganda. Last year, the students sewed approximately 50 pillowcase dresses from donated pillowcases, thread, elastic and trim. This earned them the opportunity to attend We Day Minnesota in November 2014.
Following We Day, students involved in the We Act program are to plan one local and one global action to improve their community and world.
Besides donating the dresses overseas, the ALC students also are collecting change to raise $100 to purchase two goats for families overseas.
