We Are Proud: Destination Imagination Global Finals Team

We Are Proud of the Horizon Middle School East Campus Destination Imagination Team Hooting Wolves for qualifying to compete at Destination Imagination Global Finals on May 22-25 in Kansas City, Mo. At Global Finals, the team placed 38 out of 56 teams in the middle level service-learning challenge Escape Artists. To advance to Global Finals, the team placed first at the Destination Imagination Lakes and Prairie Regional Tournament held March 16 and then placed first at the state DI tournament on March 23. Team members are Cameron Whittaker, Christopher Sween, Tate Horan, Nina Holding EagleBushaw, Nona Harrison and Amelia Bailly. Team mangers are Amy Anderson and Clare Whittaker.

We Are Proud: Minnesota Principals Academy

We Are Proud of Moorhead principals who were selected for and completed the Minnesota Principals Academy. They are Diana Johnson, assistant principalat Ellen Hopkins Elementary, Carla Smith, principalat Horizon Middle School West Campus, Angela Doll, assistant principalat Moorhead High School, Josh Haag, assistant principalat Moorhead High School, and Josh St. Louis, principalat 1 S.G. Reinertsen Elementary. The two-year program used the National Institute for School Leadership’s executive development program tailored for Minnesota educators. Each principalcompleted a culminating Action Learning Project where they identified and analyzed a problem of practice in their context, developed a strategy for improvement, and rigorously evaluated that strategy to make continued improvement. The Minnesota Principals Academy is a collaboration of the Minnesota Department of Education, Minnesota Elementary School Principals’ Association, Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals, and University of Minnesota. We Are Proud of Pam Gibb, communications coordinator, whose work was recognized in the North Dakota Professional Communicators 2019 communications contest. Gibb received second place for the district’s April 2018 Celebration of Schools dedication program, and she received two honorable mentions in the category specialty articles – education. Read More

We Are Proud: Letters About Literature State Finalists

We Are Proud of Horizon Middle School East Campus students who were selected as state finalists and placed in the Letters About Literature competition sponsored by the Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library and Minnesota Council of Teachers of English. State finalists are Ella Cole, Giancarlo D’Agostino, Liberty Johnson, Natalie Krogstad, Maddie Larson, Ethan Larson, Isabelle McDonald, Ethan Myers, Ava Nelson, Rylie Reveling, Marcus Stavenger and Max Stenehjem. Maddie Larson tied for third place overall in the middle school level, and Isabelle McDonald received an honorable mention. Dan Dooher is their Horizon East language arts teacher. Out of 235 submissions in the middle school level, 49 entries were selected as state-level finalists. Sponsored nationally by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, the contest asks readers to write a letter to an author describing how his or her work touched their life in a personal way. We Are Proud of Horizon Middle School West Campus students who were selected for the Minnesota Band Directors Association Northwest Honor Band. They are Greta Verkuilen (oboe), Sam Biselx (alto sax), Myana Bjelkengren (french horn), Ian Schimmelpfennig (trombone), Henry Theye (tuba), Jacob Gulbranson (tuba), Brittany Windingland (trumpet), and Sadie Kolehmainen (flute). Their band teachers are Dan Christianson and Tim Pipinich. The MBDA Northwest Honor Band performed April 13 at Horizon Middle School.

We Are Proud of Horizon Middle School East Campus student Tim Foster, who was selected for membership in the Minnesota Band Directors Association Grades 6-8 Honor Band for the 2018-2019 school year. Foster was one of eight percussionists in the state selected for the band through audition. The band performed April 6-7 in Shakopee, Minn. His band teachers are Dan Christianson and Tim Pipinich. We Are Proud of the Horizon Middle School East Campus Grade 8 Band for being recognized at the Raging Red Band Festival at NDSU in March. The grade 8 band received a silver award, Most Outstanding Band of the Day, and Most Outstanding Festival Band as the top-ranked middle school band at the festival. We Are Proud of the Moorhead High School Science Olympiad team for placing 12th out of 33 teams at the 2019 Science Olympiad state competition held March 2 at Bethel University. Team members are Gavin Bakke, Ross Colton, Justin Dang, Cal Darling, Austin Goble, Nathan Johnson, Lily Kolehmainen, Jonathon Morgan, Tanner Paulson, Emma Pranger, Riley Rosdahl, Jayden Schaak, Reid Shynkaruk, Lila Stanley and Isaac Vogt. Cal Darling and Lila Stanley placed first at state in the Herpetology event. This is Darling’s second state championship in a row in Herpetology. Other top 10 finishers at state are: Nathan Johnson and Austin Goble, sixth place in Geologic Mapping; Reid Shynkaruk and Jayden Schaak, sixth place in Code Busters and 10th place in Thermodynamics; Lila Stanley and Emma Pranger, eighth place in Anatomy/Physiology and eighth place in Designer Genes; Gavin Bakke and Tanner Paulson, eighth place in Mission Possible; and Justin Dang and Lily Kolehmainen, eighth place in Water Quality. We Are Proud of the Moorhead High Knowledge Bowl teams that placed first and second in the region to qualify for the 2019 Knowledge Bowl state competition in April. Twenty-two teams from large schools across the state competed in one written round and five oral rounds during the state event. The team of Jack Entzion, Rhett Kramer, Lila Stanley, Noah Pederson and Austin Goble placed fourth at state, and the team of Zoe Stein, Nathan Johnson, Grayson Braton, Justin Dang and Rachel Craig placed 12th at state. In its first year competing in this contest, Moorhead High’s team placed seventh out of 24 teams in the stock vehicle category.
