We Are Proud of Moorhead High School students Emma Craig and Rachel Craig for being named Commended Students in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. Nationwide about 34,000 Commended Students are being recognized for placing among the top 50,000 scores of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program.

We Are Proud of Krystal Anderson, deaf/hard of hearing teacher for Moorhead Area Public Schools, for receiving a 2019 High Five Award from Minnesota Hands and Voices, a program of Lifetrack. The High Five Award was created as a way for parents to publicly recognize individuals who have gone above and beyond on behalf of children who are deaf/hard of hearing. Anderson was nominated for the award by the Kitch family for her efforts to guide, teach and nurture their children. Their nomination said Anderson holds students to a high standard, not allowing them to use their hearing as an excuse, and she teaches students self-advocacy skills. Read More

We Are Proud: Moorhead High Girls Track

We Are Proud of the Moorhead High School girls track team members who qualified for the 2019 Class AA state tournament. They are Claire Howell, Summer Lindquist, Summer Carlson, Cassidy O’Meara, Annamaria Davies, Willow Carrier, Princess York and Jada Schwindt. Claire Howell won the state championship in 400 meters, and she tied for eighth place in high jump and placed seventh in 200 meters. Claire Howell, Summer Lindquist, Summer Carlson and Cassidy O’Meara placed seventh in the 4x400m relay. Annamaria Davies, Willow Carrier, Princess York and Jada Schwindt placed seventh in the 4x100m relay. Ron Davies is the girls track head coach. Read More

We Are Proud of the Moorhead High boys track team members who qualified for the 2019 Class AA state tournament. They are Houston Hall, Sutter Colborn, Dawson Strom, Zach Johnson, George Nyanforh, Jameson Cozad, Lee Karfear, Nathan Wambach and Michael Haugo. We Are Proud of Moorhead High and Horizon Middle School adapted bowling team members Elijah Rosado, Hunter Streifel, Brandon Hilde, Kaiden Oye, Ted Pasche, Nicolas Knight, Shanda Youngquist, Serenity Else, Brett Solum, William Deschene, Aidan Eklund, Zachary Rinowski, Gabriel Oye, Mitchell Cragg, Julia Lehrer, Amy Lambrecht, Taylor Scholar and Addie Loerzel, who qualified for the 2019 state tournament. Kaiden Oye placed third at state in the boys singles CI division. In CI doubles, Ted Pasche and Nicolas Knight placed second and Shanda Youngquist and Serenity Else placed 22nd. Pasche, Knight, Brett Solum and William Deschene placed ninth in CI team. Elijah Rosado placed 19th in boys singles ASD division. Hunter Streifel and Brandon Hilde competed in ASD singles, and Taylor Scholar, Julia Lehrer, Amy Lambrecht, and Addie Loerzel competed in PI doubles. Mitchell Cragg and Gabriel Oye placed 15th in PI doubles. Gabriel Oye placed 11th and Mitchell Cragg placed 14th in boys singles PI division. Amy Lambrecht placed 12th, Taylor Scholar tied for 13th place, and Julia Lehrer tied for 20th place in girls singles PI division. Heidi Fisher is the adapted bowling coach. We Are Proud: Moorhead High Boys Golf

We Are Proud of Ian Simonich, a member of the Moorhead High School boys golf team, who placed first in the Section 8AAA tournament with a two-day score of 141 (three under par), the only player under par for the tournament. Simonich advanced to the 2019 state AAA golf tournament where he finished 16th. His second-round score of 72 tied for lowest second-round score out of all 88 players. Additionally, Simonich is the first Spud to win the MGA Junior Boys Championship held July 2-3. Eric Tollefson is head coach for the boys golf team. Read More

We Are Proud of the Horizon Middle School East Campus Destination Imagination Team Hooting Wolves for qualifying to compete at Destination Imagination Global Finals on May 22-25 in Kansas City, Mo. At Global Finals, the team placed 38 out of 56 teams in the middle level service-learning challenge Escape Artists. To advance to Global Finals, the team placed first at the Destination Imagination Lakes and Prairie Regional Tournament held March 16 and then placed first at the state DI tournament on March 23. Team members are Cameron Whittaker, Christopher Sween, Tate Horan, Nina Holding EagleBushaw, Nona Harrison and Amelia Bailly. Team mangers are Amy Anderson and Clare Whittaker. Read More

We Are Proud of Moorhead principals who were selected for and completed the Minnesota Principals Academy. They are Diana Johnson, assistant principalat Ellen Hopkins Elementary, Carla Smith, principalat Horizon Middle School West Campus, Angela Doll, assistant principalat Moorhead High School, Josh Haag, assistant principalat Moorhead High School, and Josh St. Louis, principalat 1 S.G. Reinertsen Elementary. The two-year program used the National Institute for School Leadership’s executive development program tailored for Minnesota educators. Each principalcompleted a culminating Action Learning Project where they identified and analyzed a problem of practice in their context, developed a strategy for improvement, and rigorously evaluated that strategy to make continued improvement. The Minnesota Principals Academy is a collaboration of the Minnesota Department of Education, Minnesota Elementary School Principals’ Association, Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals, and University of Minnesota. We Are Proud: Letters About Literature State Finalists

We Are Proud of Horizon Middle School East Campus students who were selected as state finalists and placed in the Letters About Literature competition sponsored by the Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library and Minnesota Council of Teachers of English. State finalists are Ella Cole, Giancarlo D’Agostino, Liberty Johnson, Natalie Krogstad, Maddie Larson, Ethan Larson, Isabelle McDonald, Ethan Myers, Ava Nelson, Rylie Reveling, Marcus Stavenger and Max Stenehjem. Maddie Larson tied for third place overall in the middle school level, and Isabelle McDonald received an honorable mention. Dan Dooher is their Horizon East language arts teacher. Out of 235 submissions in the middle school level, 49 entries were selected as state-level finalists. Sponsored nationally by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, the contest asks readers to write a letter to an author describing how his or her work touched their life in a personal way.
