We Are Proud: Moorhead High Volleyball

January 14, 2019

We Are Proud of the Moorhead High School volleyball team for placing sixth in the 2018 Class 3A state tournament Nov. 8-10 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The Spuds lost to Champlin Park in the first round. They beat Edina in the consolation semifinal, but lost the consolation championship to Shakopee. Moorhead beat Willmar in five sets to win the Class 3A, Section 8 championship on Nov. 3 to advance to the volleyball state tournament for the fourth consecutive year. The Spuds ended their season with a record of 22-11.

Team members are Carleigh Vedder, Claire Howell, Alexa Gronwold, Ayana Blythe, Sam Zimmerman, Megan Haugo, Brooke Walthall, Brook Carney, Mallory Lee, Willow Carrier, Valerie Hernandez, Jalen Ennen, Rosie Anderson, Ella Swedberg and Kylie Francis. Head coach is Char Lien, assistant coaches are Amy Bjerke, Amber Gunkel and Courtney Selbitschka, and student manager is Bryn Stumo.

We Are Proud: Moorhead Teacher of the Year

We Are Proud of Brian Meyer, health education teacher at Horizon Middle School East Campus, for being named the 2019 Moorhead Teacher of the Year. Meyer has been a teacher in the district for 25 years. Previously he taught physical education at Robert Asp, Edison Elementary and Moorhead High and health at Moorhead Junior High. Meyer earned his bachelor’s degree from Southwest Minnesota State University and his master’s degree in education from North Dakota State University. He was selected as Teacher of the Year by the Education Moorhead Communications Committee. Read More

We Are Proud of the 2019 Teacher of the Year Building Representatives. Each school selects a teacher of the year for that school, and the Moorhead Teacher of the Year is selected from these candidates. The 2019 Teacher of the Year Building Representatives include:

  • Chelsey Gauer, physical therapist for Early Intervention Services at Probstfield Early Learning Center;
  • Maisa Mabrouk, early childhood special education teacher at Dorothy Dodds Elementary;
  • Kristi Rusten, kindergarten teacher at Ellen Hopkins Elementary;
  • Jennifer Dahl, learner support services teacher at Robert Asp Elementary;
  • Kirsten Johnson, third-grade teacher at S.G. Reinertsen Elementary;
  • Diana Anderson, sixth-grade teacher at Horizon Middle School West Campus;
  • Brian Meyer, health education teacher at Horizon Middle School East Campus;
  • Eric Stenehjem, science teacher at Moorhead High School; and

We Are Proud of Dr. Lynne A. Kovash, retired superintendent of Moorhead Area Public Schools, who received the 2018 Polaris Leadership Award from Minnesota Association of School Administrators. Kovash was honored for her leadership and a lifetime of achievement in education and the wider community during a statewide recognition ceremony Oct. 1 at the 2018 MASA Fall Conference in Brainerd, Minn. With this award, MASA recognized Kovash for qualities such as professional courage, creation of a legacy of excellent leadership, fostering innovation, contribution through example and mentoring, and significant tenure in each position supporting district vision and affecting positive change. We Are Proud of McCall Clark for winning first place and a $150 prize in the League of Minnesota Human Rights Commissions 2018 state essay contest. Clark was a student of Marc Wilson, language arts teacher at Horizon Middle School East Campus, when she won the contest with her essay about what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day means to her and how Dr. King’s civil rights movement impacted international human rights. We Are Proud: National Merit Semifinalist

September 24, 2018


We Are Proud of Moorhead High School student Zachary Van Raden for being named a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 16,000 semifinalists were recognized this year. The nationwide pool of semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors. More than 1.6 million juniors entered the 2019 National Merit Program by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition for more than 7,500 Merit Scholarships awards that will be offered next spring. Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements and advance to finalist standing to be considered for a Merit Scholarship. Read More

We Are Proud of Kari Yates, elementary supervisor for learning and accountability, for cowriting the book “To Know and Nurture a Reader; Conferring with Confidence and Joy,” published by Stenhouse and released in July 2018. This is Yates' second professional development text targeted toward elementary teachers. The book focuses on teacher moves and strategies for providing feedback that will help young readers stretch, thrive, and grow. Read More

We Are Proud: Moorhead High Speech Team

We Are Proud of the Moorhead High speech team for receiving the Bruno E. Jacobs team championship at the 2018 National Speech and Debate Association national tournament on June 17-22, 2018 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. NSDA’s highest award recognizes the program with the most cumulative rounds of competition. In their 36th appearance at nationals, the Spuds had 119 rounds for a total of 1,802, more than any other school in the country. Coach Rebecca Meyer-Larson was awarded the Albert S. Odom Commendation.

For the first time in program history, three Moorhead High speakers advanced to the final round, where the top six final speakers compete on the national stage. Ariana Grollman placed third in humor, Lance Morlock placed third in inform, and Anna Larson placed fourth in inform. Margaret Dickey reached the quarterfinal round (top 30) in drama. Speakers who advanced to the octafinal round (top 60) were Bridget McManamon in U.S. extemporaneous speaking, Izzy Larson in program oral interpretation, Luke Seidel in drama, Alyssa Haagenson in program oral interpretation, and Claire Stoltenow in international extemporaneous speaking.

In addition to the team championship, Moorhead was named an NSDA School of Excellence in speech for the sixth straight year. The award is given to the top 20 speech schools in the nation.

We Are Proud: Moorhead Adapted Bowling

We Are Proud of Moorhead High and Horizon Middle School adapted bowling team members Brett Solum, Aidan Ecklund, Ted Pasche, Nick Knight, Will Deschene, Taylor Scholar, Julia Lehrer, Mitchell Cragg, Sawyer Chisholm, Reis Welle and Elijah Rosado, who qualified for the 2018 state tournament. Nick Knight placed sixth and Will Deschene placed ninth at state in the boys singles CI division. Deschene and Ted Pasche placed sixth in CI division doubles. Brett Solum and Aidan Ecklund placed 14th in the CI doubles. Mitchell Cragg placed sixth and Sawyer Chisholm placed 20th in the boys singles PI division. Julia Lehrer­ placed 13th and Taylor Scholar placed 17th in the girls singles PI division. Elijah Rosado and Reis Welle placed 18th in the ASD division doubles. Heidi Fisher and Andy Parochka are the adapted bowling coaches, and Lesley Hughes is team manager. Read More
