We Are Proud: Chamber Young Entrepreneurs Academy

We Are Proud of Moorhead High School student Bridget McManamon who placed first for her business, Herstory, at the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce’s Young Entrepreneurs Academy Investor Panel Shark Tank in April. She advanced to compete in the Saunders Scholars Competition in Rochester, N.Y., on May 5. McManamon’s business, Herstory, aims to raise awareness and access to hygiene products for underprivileged girls.

We Are Proud: 2017 Minnesota Scholar of Distinction

We Are Proud of Moorhead High School student Izzy Larson, who was named a 2017 Minnesota Scholar of Distinction in Theatre Arts for her performance and scholarship project concerning connection and collaboration in social justice theater. The Scholars of Distinction award program, which is sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Education, honors students who demonstrate excellence in theater arts, science, STEM, mathematics, social studies and leadership. The Perpich Center for Arts Education administers the Scholars of Distinction in Theater Arts program, which requires students to submit a portfolio of work and present a culminating artistic project. Fifty-seven Minnesota students were honored at a recognition ceremony May 20, 2017. Larson was one of five students who received the designation of Scholar of Distinction in Theater Arts. Read More

We Are Proud: 2016-17 SpotLight Musical Theatre Program

We Are Proud of Moorhead High’s fall musical “Little Shop of Horrors” for being recognized with Hennepin Theatre Trust’s highest honors in the 2016-17 SpotLight Musical Theatre Program. The company was awarded outstanding overall production, outstanding overall performance, outstanding ensemble performance, outstanding vocal performance by an ensemble, outstanding acting performance by an ensemble, outstanding dance performance by an ensemble, outstanding student orchestra, outstanding overall technical team, and honorable mention technical crew.  
 
Individual Spotlight acting awards went to Sarah Schulz and Devon Solwold for outstanding performance in a leading role and Izzy Larson, Ariana Grollman and Jessica Anderson for outstanding performance in a supporting role. McKensie Bedore and Jason Daniels received honorable mentions. Evaluator recognition went to Kenan Stoltenow, Alex Church, Jaxon Dewald, Konner Doucette and Jacob Fuder. Rebecca Meyer-Larson directed “Little Shop of Horrors.” Moorhead High students was honored at the SpotLight Showcase on June 12, 2017, at the historic State Theatre.

We Are Proud of Moorhead High School seniors Sarah Schulz and Devon Solwold for being named National YoungArts Foundation winners. Schulz was named an honorable mention winner in theater, and Solwold was named a merit winner in cinema arts. Thousands of young artists nationwide submitted auditions and portfolios in 10 disciplines in the visual, literary and performing arts; the winners represent the top 8 percent of all applicants. Schulz and Solwold participated in master classes, workshops and performances with other winners during YoungArts New York from April 25-30, 2017. They are students of Rebecca Meyer-Larson. We Are Proud of the Moorhead High School students who qualified for the National Speech and Debate Association tournament in Birmingham, Ala., in June. The following students qualified for the national tournament: Alex Church in humor, Jessica Anderson in oratory, Skyler Klostreich/Abby Dahlberg in dramatic duo, Ariana Grollman in humor, Kenan Stoltenow in dramatic duo, Sophia Klindt in dramatic duo and humor, Simon Beach in international extemporaneous speaking, Bridget McManamon in domestic extemporaneous speaking, McKensie Bedore in informative speaking, Devon Solwold in dramatic duo and dramatic interpretation, and Izzy Larson in dramatic duo and programmed oral interpretation. We Are Proud of the Moorhead High School speech team for being named the Section 8AA champions for the 23rd consecutive year and advancing 28 speakers in 26 entries to the 2017 state speech tournament on April 21. At the state tournament, the Spuds earned 16 medals, including five gold medals, and won a second-straight State AA speech championship.
 
The following students were medalists at state: McKensie Bedore placed first in storytelling, Sarah Schulz placed first in informative speaking, Noel Kangas placed first in prose, Carolyn Solberg placed first in great speeches, Devon Solwold and Izzy Larson placed first in dramatic duo, Luke Seidel placed second in drama, Ariana Grollman, placed second in humor, Maryn Cella placed third in great speeches, Sophia Klindt placed fourth in humor, Megan Duchene placed fourth in extemporaneous reading, Abby Dahlberg and Skyler Klostriech placed fifth in duo, Kenan Stoltenow placed sixth in drama, Jennie Hastings placed sixth in poetry, Katherine Leiseth placed seventh in extemporaneous reading, Lauren Cartwright placed eighth in creative, and Bridget McManamon placed eighth in extemporaneous speaking. Head coach of the Moorhead Speech team is Rebecca Meyer-Larson.

We Are Proud of Moorhead High and Horizon Middle School adapted bowling team members Alec Stein, Brett Solum, Aidan Ecklund, Nick Knight, Taylor Scholar, Seth Helland, Julia Lehrer, Reis Welle and Elijah Rosado, who qualified for the 2017 state tournament. Elijah Rosado placed first at state in the boys singles ASD division. Rosado and Reis Welle placed ninth in the ASD doubles. Alec Stein, Brett Solum, Aidan Ecklund and Nick Knight placed 11th in the CI team competition, and Solum and Ecklund placed 14th in the CI doubles. Seth Helland competed in the PI singles, and Julia Lehrer competed in PI singles and PI doubles. Taylor Scholar placed 15th in the girls’ singles PI division and competed in PI doubles. Heidi Fisher is the adapted bowling coach, and Lesley Hughes is team manager. Read More

We Are Proud of Moorhead High School student Luke Gulbranson for placing first for the second year in a row in the local level of a drafting competition sponsored by the National Association of Women in Construction Education Foundation. Gulbranson’s plans then placed first at the regional level, which includes nine Midwest states, to advance to the national competition. Gulbranson is a student of Hannah Reisdorf, Moorhead High industrial technology teacher.

We Are Proud of Amy Bjerke, Moorhead High volleyball assistant coach, for being named Class AAA State Assistant Coach of the Year by the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Board of Control. Bjerke will be honored at the Minnesota Volleyball Coaches Clinic in July and at the Minnesota State Coaches Association Banquet in the fall.

We Are Proud of the six Moorhead High School visual arts students who competed at the Minnesota State High School League Visual Arts 8AA section competition on April 28 in Alexandria. Alison Astrup and Shayla Dau each earned an Excellent rating. Morgan Hansen earned three Excellent ratings, and Mikayla Sailer earned a Caricature Sketch Award. Hali Selseth earned an Excellent rating and a Teacher’s Choice Award. Abram Sand earned two Excellent ratings, a Teacher’s Choice Award, a Caricature Sketch Award, one Superior rating, and one Best of Show rating. Grady Carlson and Marissa Van Vleet are their art teachers.
