Horizon teams place second, fourth and sixth in regional math tournament

March 17, 2015

Several Horizon Middle Schools students received individual awards, and Moorhead teams placed second, fourth and sixth in the Grade 6 Regional Math Masters Tournament held in Moorhead on March 13. Sixteen teams from the area participated in individual and team rounds.

Horizon Middle School House 6A Team placed second in the Math Masters Tournament. Team members are Claire Atchison, Jack Greelis, Lanie Leines, Stella Mehlhoff and Ian Nelson. Their math teacher is Sharon Nelson.

The Horizon House 6B Team placed fourth in the tournament. Team members are Ethan Fairfield, Jacob Hendrickson, Riley Swenson, Jasmine Thayer and Patrick Wirries. Their math teacher is Diana Anderson.

The Horizon House 6C Team placed sixth in the tournament. Team members are Owen Baumgartner, Emma Pranger, Lila Stanley, Beth Stein and Mason Voxland. Their math teacher is Barb Stack.

Individual ribbons went to Horizon students Lila Stanley, sixth place; Lanie Leines, ninth place; and Patrick Wirries, 12th place. Leines also earned a ribbon for placing ninth in Fact Drill.

Leigh Dornfeld is the Math Masters coordinator.

Math Masters of Minnesota is a statewide competition that challenges students to use higher-order thinking skills and problem-solving abilities in mathematics and recognizes academic effort and achievement.
