Elementary school secure entrances, office remodeling projects underway
July 7, 2016
During the June 27 School Board meeting, Steve Gehrtz, Gehrtz Construction Services, provided the board with an update on the work happening this summer at the three elementary schools to provide for increased safety and security.
Concrete foundation work was being completed at Robert Asp Elementary, while the structural steel began going up last week at Ellen Hopkins Elementary. Both schools are getting additions to move their offices adjacent to new secure entrances.
At S.G. Reinertsen Elementary School, most of the work is interior remodeling with just a small addition to move the health office. Gehrtz said the demolition is done and the metal framing was mostly complete. Drywall for the interior remodeling was scheduled to begin this week.
Additional remodeling work at the elementary schools will be done during the summer of 2017.
The work at the three schools is part of the $78.2 million in projects approved by voters in November. The bond referendum will provide for growth and learning by adding secure entries in all school buildings; creating adequate and appropriate learning environments for students from early childhood through grade 8; building a K-4 elementary; building a grades 5-6 school connected to Horizon Middle School to create a shared grades 5-8 campus reducing transitions for students; building an auditorium for school and community use at Horizon Middle School; and returning Probstfield Center for Education to an early childhood and district education center focused on the needs of our youngest learners.
