School Board appoints Cindy Fagerlie to board

January 9, 2017

At the Jan. 9 meeting, the Moorhead School Board voted to appoint former member Cindy Fagerlie to the board until a successor is elected.

The appointment of the new School Board member comes after the resignation of Laurie Johnson at the end of December 2016 when she moved out of state. Two years remain in Johnson’s term.

Fagerlie has served on the board since 2004, but she did not run for re-election in November 2016.

Bill Tomhave, School Board chair, said he had been contacted by past board members or candidates about the appointment. Appointing Fagerlie, whose term just ended, allows for continuity on the board without having a delay in training a new member, and it does not advantage anyone who might be running for the position in the special election, Tomhave said.

Fagerlie’s appointment is effective 30 days after the adoption of the resolution unless a valid petition to reject the appointee is filed with the school district clerk pursuant to Minnesota Statutes.

Unless state law changes, Moorhead Area Public Schools will be required to run a special election to fill the remainder of Johnson’s term — approximately one year. This will cost the district $10,000 to $20,000.
