Two Moorhead schools each receive $5,000 for STEM learning

Earlier this school year, American Crystal Sugar Company awarded $5,000 grants to Red River Area Learning Center and Moorhead High School to support STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education.
Wylie Wisnewski, science teacher at Red River Area Learning Center, received the $5,000 grant to support project-based learning and curriculum aimed at restoring native habitat around the school. Red River ALC students will use the Earth Partnership curriculum adapted for the Red River Valley, he said. They will use a site analysis to develop a native species garden, including looking at variables that affect plant growth.
Jana Kasper, a science teacher at Moorhead High School, received the $5,000 grant to purchase Vernier LabQuest2 analysis system for the science department.
Representatives from American Crystal visited the schools to present the teachers with a check for the grant. Students had the opportunity to ask a couple questions of the engineers and to learn more about science jobs available with the company.
Grant recipients were selected through an application process that required schools to explain the educational rationale for projects and detail how projects would promote creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration among students, the American Crystal Sugar news release said. Eligible schools included all secondary schools throughout the Red River Valley region, where American Crystal’s 4,000-plus employees and stakeholders live and work.
