Kovash named Administrator of Excellence by MASA

March 7, 2017

The Minnesota Association of School Administrators has named Dr. Lynne Kovash, superintendent of Moorhead Area Public Schools, as a 2017 Administrator of Excellence. Kovash is being recognized for her leadership, concern for students, and active involvement in professional and community affairs. She will be honored at a statewide recognition ceremony during the MASA/MASE Spring Conference, March 9-10, 2017, in Brooklyn Park.

Kovash’s achievements reflect her ability to lead important changes in the educational system. In 2015, Kovash oversaw the approval of a $78.2 million bond referendum to build a new grades K-4 elementary school, grades 5-6 school connected to Horizon Middle School, and safety and security upgrades for all buildings.

The district is now undertaking a two-year study to develop a portrait of a Moorhead High School 21st Century graduate. From that study the task force will discuss the facilities needed to provide the education desired by the community.

Kovash implemented the AdvancEd process for continuous improvement and accreditation, working together with the lead administrator for the district to develop the training and processes for the first accreditation visit. The district participated in its first external review and received accreditation as a result of the first review. The process is now developing to use to recommendations for improvement to further refine and develop district systems.

Previously Kovash served as assistant superintendent of teaching and learning for the district. Kovash is currently president of the Moorhead Rotary, and she serves on numerous local boards and committees. She is an active MASA and AASA member. She served as MASA President in 2014-15 and is currently a member of the AASA Governing Board. Kovash also is involved in EdLeader 21 and serves on the Superintendent Advisory Committee for the national organization.

Each year, MASA recognizes members for their contribution to public education. MASA is a professional organization of Minnesota’s school leaders, including superintendents, assistant superintendents, directors of special education, and other central office administrators, as well as state department administrators, college, and university professors, and other educators throughout Minnesota dedicated to educational leadership for students.
