Hopkins Elementary hosts Nature Play Day on May 13

May 8, 2017

Ellen Hopkins Elementary Nature Play Park presents the second annual Nature Play Day event from 2-4 p.m. May 13  at the Nature Play Park on the Ellen Hopkins Elementary School grounds. The event is free for all ages and an opportunity to connect with nature and the community.

Nature Play Day features interactive booths from local groups, including Audubon Dakota and the Concordia College Science Academy. Activities will include planting the community gardens, making seed bombs, and painting with natural dyes. Participants also will have the opportunity to engage with nature through poetry.

The EHES Nature Play Park plans to expand the gardens by planting a variety of seeds, encouraging students to learn about the process of gardening and having fresh foods in their homes and learning about pollinators. Students will be able to play on straw bales and wood logs to engage in nature play. Healthy snacks will be provided.

Environmental education encourages students to investigate, research and make decisions regarding the environment, heightening their critical- and creative-thinking skills.

Nature Play was created by the National Wildlife Foundation to bring nature back into playgrounds. The idea behind a nature play space is that instead of the standard, cookie cutter metal and plastic structures that make up the bulk of today’s playgrounds, people can incorporate the surrounding landscape and vegetation to bring nature to children’s daily outdoor play and learning environments.
