14 players score in boys hockey win

January 22, 2018

After suffering a shutout loss to Brainerd, boys hockey head coach Jon Ammerman moved skaters around to shake things up. Line changes included Cole O’Connell moving to the second line while Kyler Kleven swapped places and moved to the first line. Carter Randklev, Kleven and Jack Stetz made up the first line, and Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe, O’Connell and Parker Dronen made up the second line. Spud backup goalie Ethan Miller started the game as the Moorhead goalie.

The changes seemed to work as the Spuds overpowered the Breck team for a 13-1 victory on Jan. 13. Fourteen different players scored goals and added assist points to their personal stats.

Stetz began the scoring run for Moorhead, popping in a rebound on the power play. Less then four minutes later, he stuffed in another rebound. Henkemeyer-Howe scored the last goal in the opening period and the first goal in the second. O’Connell, Ethan Frisch and Randklev each added a goal and Henkemeyer-Howe scored the final goal in the second period for a hat trick.

The Spuds continued skating hard and passing well in the third period, adding five more goals. O’Connell scored his second goal of the night, while Tommy Horan and Kleven scored one goal each. Not to be left out, recently promoted Cullen Gess got not just his first varsity goal, but also his second, to complete the Spud scoring for the night.

O’Connell, Dronen, Parker Larson, Carter Johnson and Ryan Stafford each had two assists for Moorhead, and Kleven, Randklev, Karson Kvalevog, Frisch, Henkemeyer-Howe and Gramer each added one assist. Moorhead put 37 additional shots on goal. Miller had nine saves.

The Moorhead High boys hockey team plays at Roseau Jan. 23 and will return home at 6 p.m. Jan. 27 to play Rogers at the Sports Center.
