Moorhead High boys basketball team loses close semifinal section game

March 16, 2018

The Moorhead High boys basketball team won a rousing upset in overtime against St. Cloud Tech 92-83 last week in the Class 4A Section 8 tournament to advance to the semifinal game.

In the semifinal game against Buffalo, the Spuds were down by 14 points at halftime and battled their way back to pull ahead in the second half. The game went back and forth for the rest of the half. Buffalo took a lead late in the game, and while the Spuds kept it close, they came up short in the 72-70 loss.

Drew Hagen led the Spuds in scoring at the section tournament. He scored 26 points in the win against St. Cloud Tech and 20 points in the loss to Buffalo.

The Spuds end their season at 12-16, but the record does not show the improvement that Coach Tyler Bormann achieved with his team.

“I’m extremely proud of the way our team came together over the course of the year and the strides we took as a group to earn the opportunity to play for a berth in the section final, coming only one possession short of being one of the final 16 teams at the AAAA level in Minnesota,” Bormann said. “Our six seniors had a tremendous impact on our program, contributing to our current and future success, and they will certainly be missed.”
