Moorhead High School’s award-winning theater program presents the musical “Chicago”

October 24, 2014

Moorhead High Theater presents “Chicago,” the Tony Award-winning musical about fame, fortune, and “all that jazz” on Nov. 14-15, 20-23 and 29.

Based on a 1926 play by Chicago Tribune reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins, “Chicago” tells the story of Roxie Hart, a chorus girl who murders her two-timing boyfriend, tries to pin it on her clueless husband, and then manages to avoid prison with the help of razzle-dazzle lawyer Billy Flynn. Roxie uses the trial to propel herself to showbiz stardom along with another murderous chorus girl, Velma Kelly. A dark parable of American justice, “Chicago” is a musical extravaganza that includes show-stopping numbers like “All That Jazz,” “Cell Block Tango,” “Razzle Dazzle” and “Class.”

Moorhead High’s production is directed by Rebecca Meyer-Larson. “Oddly, greed, corruption, exploitation and treachery have never been so fun,” Meyer-Larson said. “This musical harkens back to the musical theatre stylings of vaudeville as it sweeps up audiences in dazzling choreography and toe-tapping jazz melodies, and yet the story could just as easily have been ripped from today’s headlines.”

So “slick your hair and wear your buckle shoes...” for this show that will run Nov. 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 29 at 7:30 p.m. with a 2 p.m. matinee performance Nov. 29. A sign-language interpreted performance will be Nov. 20. May not be suitable for young audiences.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for students and can be reserved online at http://www.MoorheadSchools.org/tix or http://www.MoorheadTheater.com or by calling the MHS Activities Office at 218-284-2255. Ticket pre-sales for button holders or those who want to pay the premium seat fee begin at 4:30 p.m Oct. 24. General ticket sales begin at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 31.

Moorhead High School’s musical theater department has been awarded the Hennepin Theatre Trust’s Spotlight Musical Theater Award for Production Excellence in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.
