Moorhead High track team members qualify for state tournament

June 8, 2018

Moorhead High’s Claire Howell takes off after Olivia Watson hands off the baton in the girls track 4x400-meter relay at the 8AA Section Finals held June 2 at Moorhead High School’s Jim Gotta Stadium. Cassidy O’Meara and Alexandra Maddux were the other runners on the relay team, which placed second in the race and qualified for the state meet starting Friday, June 8 at Hamline University.

Howell also qualified for state in the 400-meter race, which she won, and the 200-meter race where she placed second.

The boys track team was named the Region 8AA champions, and Coach Tom Dooher was voted the Track Coach of the Year for the region.

A number of other Spuds are heading to the state meet June 8. Cole Crompton won the boys track 400-meter and anchored the boys 4x400 relay team. The relay team of Crompton, Noah Melton, Seth Lawrence and Hunter Wollschlager placed second. Sutter Colborn won the boys high jump, Ashley Warne placed second in the girls triple jump, Otis Weah won the boys triple jump and placed second in the long jump, Gavun Brooks-Samek placed second in the boys triple long jump, and Zach Johnson won the 3,200-meter race. Sam Gebhart, Dawson Strom, Austin Gruenberg and Noah Melton placed second in the boys 4x800 relay.
