Moorhead boys basketball team wins final regular season games

March 4, 2019

Moorhead High’s Maleeck Harden-Hayes dangles from the hoop after dunking the ball during the last regular season home game against Detroit Lakes at Moorhead High School on Feb. 26. His teammates leapt to their feet as Harden-Hayes caught an alley-oop pass and stuffed the ball, hanging on the rim as the ball passed through the net.

It was senior night for the Spuds, and the four seniors, Anthony Angotti, Logan Garcia, Maleeck Harden-Hayes, and Peter Narum were honored along with their parents at mid court. Seniors Angotti, Garcia, Harden-Hayes and Narum, along with junior Drew Hagen, started the game.

Both teams held the score pretty even through the first few minutes of play. Then Moorhead picked up the scoring, and Detroit Lakes could not keep pace. The Spuds outscored the Lakers by 22 points. Moorhead led by 17 points going into halftime and won 68-46 in a game that had every Spud player see action on the court.

Harden-Hayes led the scoring for Moorhead with 19 points. Brady Walthall came off the bench to score 17 points, hitting four of six three-point shots. Quentin Hegg also came off the bench to score 13 points and had three steals. Narum and Trey Feeney controlled the boards, grabbing seven rebounds each, while Feeney also added seven points. Hagen chipped in with five points and had six assists.

The Spuds played their final regular season game at Brainerd on Feb. 28, defeating the Warriors 77-68 as five players scored in double digits. Hagen was the leading scorer for the Spuds, putting up 18 points. Harden-Hayes added 17 points, and Quentin Hegg contributed 13 points. Walthall had 11 points, and Donnovin Hinsz chipped in 10 points.

The Spuds finished the regular season with a 20-5 record. They open section tournament play at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 5 against Rogers at Moorhead High. If they defeat Rogers they play again March 9.
