Moorhead High School theater premieres “Matilda The Musical”

November 1, 2019

Moorhead High School’s award-winning theater department is excited to announce the regional premiere of “Matilda The Musical” in November.

Based on the beloved novel by best-selling author Roald Dahl (“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “James and the Giant Peach”), “Matilda The Musical” is the story of an extraordinary girl who, armed with a vivid imagination and a sharp mind, dares to take a stand and change her own destiny.

Minutes after the rights became available, director Rebecca Meyer-Larson scooped up the opportunity to produce the show.

“It is exciting to introduce the Fargo-Moorhead community to this Broadway and West End smash hit,” Meyer-Larson said. “Fans of the book will appreciate the wit and whimsy of the story, while fans of musical theater will be dazzled by the beautiful vocals and powerhouse choreography. The message ‘even though you’re little you can do a lot’ is celebrated with a lot of heart and a touch of magic!”

“Matilda The Musical”will be performed at the Moorhead High School auditorium at 7 p.m. Nov. 15, 16, 22, 23, 29 and 30 with 2 p.m. matinees on Nov. 17 and 24. Tickets can be reserved online at www.MoorheadSchools.org/tix or by calling the MHS Activities Office at 218-284-2255 beginning Nov. 1. Ticket prices are $11 for adults and $7 for students.

Moorhead High theater strives to make its performances and facilities accessible to all patrons. A sign-language interpreted performance will be Nov. 17. For tickets for this performance or if you need additional assistance, please contact the Activities Office.

In an effort to celebrate literacy and the legacy of Roald Dahl, the first weekend of productions will include a post-show ice cream social with the cast. All proceeds from this ice-cream gathering will be used to supply children’s books to area classrooms, homeless shelters and hospitals.

Moorhead High School’s musical theater department has been awarded the Hennepin Theatre Trust’s Spotlight Musical Theater Award for Production Excellence in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
